ORAL HYGIENE INSTRUCTIONS

Studies have shown that plaque starts to form minutes after it is removed.  This is why effective plaque control is important.  At Dr. Chan Dentistry, we are always excited to educate you on proper oral hygiene.  Here are our general recommendations:

Floss at least once daily

There are spaces between your teeth that cannot be cleaned with brushing alone, and also the most common areas of decay.  For best results, take a piece of floss that is about 12 inches long.  Using your thumbs and forefingers, guide the floss between your teeth and wrap around each tooth in a C shape with an up and down motion.  Continue the process but make sure your floss is clean each time it is inserted.  If dexterity is an issue, you may also try an interproximal brush or dental pick.

Waterpik once daily.

Waterpik once daily.

Waterpik is an oral health appliance that uses a jet of water to clean out food deposits, plaque, and germs from between the teeth and gums, i.e. gum pockets.  While a toothbrush is sufficient in cleaning above and along the gum line, the water pressure and power pulses of Waterpik goes beyond.  A wonderful tool to add to your oral hygiene routine, and particularly important for those who suffer from gum

disease or simply need extra help in difficult to reach areas.  Please note that a Waterpik is not a true alternative to dental floss as we still need to clean out those areas between the teeth.

Brush twice daily for two minutes

Spend an equal amount of time brushing on all surfaces in a short, circular motion.  Hold the brush a 45-degree angle pointed towards the gum.  A gentle amount of pressure is sufficient to prevent gum recession.  Finally, brush your tongue, which holds bacteria like a sponge.  Only use a soft-bristled toothbrush and change every two to three months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

Use an alcohol free antibacterial mouthwash every day

Antibacterial mouthwash helps keep harmful oral bacteria at bay reducing plaque buildup.  Warm salt water is also a good alternative in keeping the oral cavity clean.
