  • What is the difference between DDS and DMD?

Many patients have inquired about the difference between a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) and DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery).  While the names are different, they represent the same education.  According to the American Dental Association, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery established the first Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1840. When Harvard University started its dental school in 1867, their degrees were called Dentariae Medicane Doctorat, which is Latin for Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry.  How a university decides on DDS or DMD is solely at their discretion.
